Why in the HELL don't they just mail the badges to the people who preregister? That line was frigging INSANE.

Re: Will someone please explain something to me?
Sat, September 19, 2009 - 10:34 AMthats as difficult a question to answer as why is the sky blue. the answer is logistics, and NO employees. everyone you see "working" for the con are *ahem* "volunteers" to get thier badge for free or at a reduced rate. theres maybe 5 people that put together this even each year. all the profit and proceeds go into thier accounts. hell they dont even pay the celeb guests that come, thats why they all charge $$$ for autographs and pics. plus out of 60,000+ atendees probably a third of that pre-regs -

Re: Will someone please explain something to me?
Sat, September 19, 2009 - 7:34 PMWould it make it worth their while to charge, say, an extra $10-$15 for any preregistrant who wants their badge mailed to them? They could pocket the extra $$. You bet your ass I'd pay an extra $15 to not have to stand in that frigging line. -

Re: Will someone please explain something to me?
Sun, September 20, 2009 - 5:34 AMWell the problem is then they'd have a totally different problem, the deluge of people screaming "Why did you up the badge price by $XX???"
I imagine another reason to hold it off as long as possible is to prevent badge counterfitting, a potentially minor issue but it's the first thing that popped into my criminal mind. -

Well you wouldn't *have* to pay the extra $$. You could pay the regular price and wait in line, like always.
"I imagine another reason to hold it off as long as possible is to prevent badge counterfitting, a potentially minor issue but it's the first thing that popped into my criminal mind."
I wonder how big of a problem this would actually be. -

Re: Will someone please explain something to me?
Sun, September 20, 2009 - 11:04 AMWell my experience with people is it's not the actual threat but the perception of the threat. Though given how much higher than average the number of hackers go to this con, it might be a genuine concern. -

Re: Will someone please explain something to me?
Tue, September 22, 2009 - 9:48 AMI think the conterfeitting, which is biggest reason why is actually a pretty small concern.
I know two people that were able to attend without getting a badge this year. One just came down to play games and nobody checked his badge, he just plunked down the registration fee for the games and got away with it. my other friend has sed the same trick for the last three years: he tcks a lanyard into his clothes, and if confronted for his badge, he simply says "oh no~! my badge~!!" and pretends that it was lost off his lanyard. (he's an actor)
They don't really check badges like they used to. there's too much traffic to keep p with it.
so what other reasons could they give us for not mailing them out? because you don't even need to counterfeit a badge to get in, just to get into big events like MC Chris' B'Day party and signings and whatnot. -

This is underhanded and I have to say very funny! -

Re: Will someone please explain something to me?
Thu, September 24, 2009 - 6:45 AMNormally I'm inclined to have a deaf ear to companies whining about people stealing services that are effectively victimless, but in this one situation I will say I am willing to tolerate their policy as DragonCon is the walking definition of a shoestring operation. Also $60 for a four day pass is really not a tremendous cost for four days of sheer bliss. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Will someone please explain something to me?
Mon, October 26, 2009 - 3:35 PMshoestring my ASS. this con turns almost a 100% profit off badge sales. the pass prices were $100 this year of which 95 out of the 100 went to the organizers pockets. this con is about to implode on itself from sheer size and underhandedness. one of my roomates go egged by football assholes and then at the end of the con had her original artwork STOLEN. artwork done specifically for her by Ted Naifeh. keep that naieve thinking looks good on ya -

Re: Will someone please explain something to me?
Thu, October 29, 2009 - 2:37 PMOk first...
If you paid for it AT THE DOOR then yeah you paid the premium price. Sorry but most of us who have gone more than once learned to take advantage of the "buy it way in advance" price.
Second, I have worked with these guys and if they are making more than a nickel's profit they have hidden it really damned well. While the vendors have to pay for their own spaces, the conference rooms and meeting areas are NOT provided by the hotel and to rent basically an entire 4-star hotel is NOT cheap. Also I have attended far smaller con's with far fewer names and paid as much or more. If you feel so cheated you are free to not return.
The football guys they have NO control over. Hotels are open to the public and any asshole who wants to be a pest has to be dealt with personally. The most the security can do is boot them out but if they are tenants then we're just SOL. My solution would be reply to the harassment in kind, remind them that a dozen football jackoffs vs 60,000 drunk nerds is really not the kind of fight they wanna take on. -

Re: Will someone please explain something to me?
Thu, October 29, 2009 - 3:46 PMok so I have Been going to DragonCon for 9 years straight.
second if you have worked with them then you sadly are in what I like to call the kool aid crowd. I realize, because I work for a hotel myself. that renting out one for a con is not cheap. however with the amount of bank this con makes on a yearly basis its almost pocket change to them. I dont know what other smaller cons you are going to but you are getting ass raped if you are paying more than what you pay here. you are very misguided and choose not to look at common sense facts and well I feel sorry that you are like that. and trust me this past year was my last for this fucking con.
as far as the football fans no thats not the hotels fault, its the citys. and the fact there were 100,000 nerds there (60,000 is a naieve number) didnt stop me from getting into a schuffle nore my roomate from getting egged. -

Re: Will someone please explain something to me?
Fri, October 30, 2009 - 3:30 PMI am no longer one of the Kool Aid crowd, mostly because I prefer to spend the con having fun, not working. However while I was working with them everything was run on the very fringes of what could be afforded. If you really are convinced they are bilking 60 (or 100) thousand loyal attendees, by all means contact the IRS and inform them that a non-profit corporation is committing fraud. Have fun with that.
Furthermore, as for the 'ass raping' of other 'cons, remember that while DC can probably negotiate bulk pricing most smaller cons get the more premium pricing and naturally pass that on to the attendees. They are also more specialty events. NY Comic Con charged $40 last year, slightly cheaper than my DC pass but it was 1/4 the size and was lackluster to say the least. DefCon (big hacker 'con) charges $80 for their pass but again, a specialty event and for hacker con's it was by far the cheapest (the big one Black Hat charges in four figures). I know you desperately want to feel cheated having stupidly paid full price but seriously that's your own damn fault.
I can think of ALOT of things that cost as much or more than my yearly pass and don't provide me with nearly as much enjoyment. Please however, if you think you are being cheated, name me a convention with the kind of attendance, popularity and general enthusiasm DC has that charges less. The only rival I can think of is the SD Comic Con, but a THREE day pass to San Diego Comic Con will run you $50 and that's assuming you buy in advance before they get sold out. So if there are some far cheaper alternative conventions please let us all know.
As for the outside party crashers, they are a nuisance and this city does have a shitty history of pissing on any real fun they aren't personally profiting from. The only thing I can advise is next year bring some of your own eggs. Otherwise don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. -

Re: Will someone please explain something to me?
Fri, October 30, 2009 - 4:32 PMoh trust me. DC is far from non profit. also I have honestly had more fun at Heroes, conNOOGA, and AWA than DragonCon. it has become cliquy and completely strayed away from what its supposed to be about. You just contradicted yourself as well. more well organized cons I.E. SDCC and NYCC are far cheaper and BETTER. as I have stated before this past year is my last for this shit con. you and all the other defenders can have it. -
-
Re: Will someone please explain something to me?
Sat, October 31, 2009 - 5:02 AMI never said SDCC was less enjoyable. It is comparable in price and one day shorter.
I have attended NYCC three times, it is ten bucks cheaper and while it was worth returning to, I never left having had nearly as much fun as DC gives but you are entitled to your own opinions there. As for better organized, unless you have worked on the inside I am not really sure how you come to that conclusion.

Re: Will someone please explain something to me?
Fri, October 30, 2009 - 4:36 PMgee I wonder if the fact you are stuck in that little secluded world known as Atlanta is a reason you defend this con so much. seriously. find something else to attend. -
-
Re: Will someone please explain something to me?
Sat, October 31, 2009 - 5:05 AMActually I have been to more tech related conventions (DefCon, PhreakNic, HackCon and DrupalCon), than scifi/fantasy ones. I've also lived in four other major cities besides Atlanta which I am likely to be leaving soon anyway. Care to drive your foot any deeper into your mouth? -

Re: Will someone please explain something to me?
Sun, November 8, 2009 - 11:57 AMseriously David. each sentence you utter puts you further off target.
The Ibarb isn't who you think he is. Clearly.
also, as for those of us who buy our badges early; know what to expect, and manage to have a good time... yes we will keep it. thanks.
now if you're serious about no longer attending the con, can you step outside please? this tribe is for attendees. Thanks.
